New Teachers on the Block: Jaewon Lee

New math teacher Jaewon Lee was initially drawn to math because, to her, it was a way of making sense of the world and she found it fun. She liked that there were different ways of tackling problems. So after majoring in math at UCSD, it made sense to Lee to go back to school there for her master’s degree in education. After teaching for a year at Torrey Pines, Lee is starting her first year teaching here. Lee received warm welcomes from the staff and classes full of kids who are respectful and do what they are supposed to do, so she is excited to continue her teaching journey here at SDA.

Despite this, however, she still says that she has teacher anxiety dreams. In her dreams, her students are all over the place and she can’t find her classroom materials before a visit from the principal.

In her free time, Lee likes to take naps, she said smiling, and eat good food. Though she doesn’t have a favorite food, she likes visiting coffee shops and having pastries with her drinks. She also likes to talk to her friends, and loves to spend time on Pinterest looking at pictures of interior design.

Unlike SDA, the high school that Lee attended was small. In high school she was the commander of her school’s drill team, an interest that followed her to college as she joined the ROTC. She was also a member of her school’s orchestra, and she describes herself as having been involved in everything that she could have been involved in. In addition to that, Lee also has a second degree black belt in a form of Korean martial arts.

Lee hopes to become a part of the SDA community and hopes that she can go above and beyond simply being teacher, and she would like to make an impact on the school’s community. She is most excited for being able to participate in Homeroom Olympics, but is also looking forward to attending Forum meetings and getting to experience Exhibition Day.
