Those Beautiful Wednesdays

Every other Wednesday SDA students gain nearly two extra hours in the morning to do basically whatever they want.  Most students like Sophomore Gabrielle Gregg tend to sleep because “I don’t sleep otherwise… so I figure I should get some sleep and I think late starts are beneficial for that.”

However many students tend to wake up at the normal time for various reasons. Freshman Brayden Feinberg, for example, said, “Oftentimes I will take a couple of my friends and my sisters friends, and we will drive to a breakfast restaurant… rarely ever do I sleep in.”

Freshman Lily Franzwa said, “I usually come to school on late start days around 8 or get dropped off at a friend’s to hang out because my parents work and can’t drop me off any later.”

Coffee lovers like freshman Olivia Hussey said she likes “ to go get tea or coffee at places like Starbucks or Coffee Bean”

Although students love catching up on sleep and hanging out with friends,   Hussey disliked that late start days do not include homeroom.  “I just like having homeroom and it’s kind of my favorite time of the day to do last minute homework and hang out with friends,”  she said.

Not everyone agrees.  “Late starts make your classes shorter which is nice, and although homeroom is sometimes nice to have I don’t find it very useful,” Feinberg said.

Many students were not aware why they have late start days. Freshman Matthew Lee said, “This is more of a guess, but I think it is to allow students some time to catch up on sleep, get some work done, or do recreational activities.” On late start days SDA staff and teachers, arrive at the usual times to attend scheduled morning meetings.
