Surfing or Skating?

Most people ask, “What do you choose; face in the water or face into the concrete?” Personally, I would choose into the concrete because of my passion for skating, but there are many ups and downs to both surfing and skating that can change someone’s preference. I am both a skater and a surfer, but here are some reasons why I prefer skating over surfing.

Why is skating a much more preferable sport than surfing? There are many reasons, such as the love for land and not being wet and/or cold. Skating is much more satisfying, especially when you land a big trick.

When you fall while surfing, nothing really happens; you just land in the water and get back on your board. That’s one reason why people enjoy surfing more than skating because you don’t take hard slams like skating. However, when you fall skateboarding and get back up and land the trick, it feels like you are on top of the fricken world.

Skating is also year-round. Surfing is too, but there are differences to year round skating and year-round surfing. During the winter, surfing can be cold and undesirable, and during the summer, the beach can look like a lake with no waves. But with skating, the concrete is always there and never leaving so I can skate anytime anywhere (even at night!).

Many people say that skating is a much more expensive sport than surfing. This can be true in some cases. Skating involves buying new decks (about every other month), trucks (maybe once a year or more), wheels (maybe every 11 months), bearings (maybe every 12 months), and shoes. This is all depending on how much you skate, and can become very pricey.

Surfing can be just as pricey, maybe even more because a new wet suit costs $200, and a new board can range from $100 all the way to $3,000. Surfing equipment can last much longer than skating equipment, but could be more expensive in total.

We live in a town where both sports are popular but in my opinion skating is a much more fun sport than surfing.
