Mustang Musings: Time Travel

Though time machines do not exist to the public, the Mustang asked SDA where (or when) they would travel, given the chance to bend time. Answers ranged from as soon as 1969s Woodstock to Victorian France, or all the way back to the Prehistoric Age, where restrictions on pet dinosaurs were not enforced.

 

“I would travel to New York in the 1970s. I think it would be super cool to go to a disco wearing a wig and not look cheesy.” – Sophomore Sophia Hurley

 

“I think it would be cool to go back to the 1940s when my great grandmother was alive. We  could go shopping together. She was a tailor so she could help me make clothes.” – Sophomore Gina Checchia

 

“Probably 1984, because some great albums came out that year. I also think that it would be cool to be in a time without any technology and live a simpler life.” – Sophomore Alex Pence

 

“I would time travel to the 1930s in Paris and dance with F. Scott Fitzgerald.” – Senior Kelsey Payne

 

“I would time travel to the 1600s in England because I love the way people dressed back then.” – Senior Taylor Johnson

 

“I would time travel to the 1950s so I could see Jackie Robinson play baseball for the Brooklyn Dodgers.  He is such an inspiration to me and it would be awesome to actually see him play.” – Junior Philip Paris

 

“[I would visit] the 1970s so I could go to Woodstock.” – Senior Brendan Walsh

 

“I would want to travel back to the dinosaur time because dinosaurs are frickin’ awesome. My favorite kind of dinosaur is the velociraptor because they were fast and killed stuff with their feet.” – Freshman Quinn Sakihara

 

“I would want to travel back to the mid-1800s in the Great Plains because in that time the architecture and design of the different buildings were quite exquisite. Also, everyday life seemed more relaxed.” – Freshman Chloe Canler

 

“I would travel back to maybe the Renaissance just for a couple of hours because it seems like a pretty fancy period because of all the paintings and inventions. Or maybe I would go to several years ago, the 1990s to an early Radiohead concert or even more years ago to a Beatles concert.” – Freshman Emma Noble

 

“I would go to the 1920s because of the authors and the parties. I like all of the 1920s authors. Maybe I wouldn’t really meet any, but it would be interesting to understand their background. I would probably get autographs.” – Senior John Landers

 

“The early 1900s. Back then it was common to get an apprenticeship at 15 and to get married at 17. I would want to work for a metal smith, learn a craft. It was just such a different lifestyle.”  – Senior Josh Herz

 

“The 1960s. Because… everyone was really happy and discovering new things. They were discovering how to live a fulfilling life without needing a standard of success. Go to school, have kids, make money… no. Party with Austin Powers.” – Freshman Zack Kanzler

“I think I’d like to go back to WWII, so like, 1940s…but IDK, I’d want to be a guy back then. It would either be the 1940s so I could fly planes with the Army Air Corps or maybe I’d go way back to the Roman Empire, because I always thought that would be cool.” – Senior Marissa Schuling

 

“The 1980s, everyone had dumb hair and listened to really good pop rock.” – Senior Jacob Duga

 

“I’d like to go back to the Roaring Twenties and the time of Gatsby because it seems like they had some cool parties.” – Senior Marc Bahbahani

 

“I would go to the Renaissance and mess with the old relics before they happened because I would want to see what happened and what changed. I think I would go to Italy because I like the accent there and because that’s where people like Leonardo Da Vinci lived.” – Freshman Riva Cooper

 

“I’d go to the 1920s because it was the Big Band Era and it was awesome and extremely classy.” – Senior Ben Shapero

 

“I would go back to the 1990s because the TV shows were good and the entertainment industry was booming. Everything was original. The people were also more genuine and everything was just chill.” – Freshman Tina Bullington

 

“Oh the 1920s for sure! They had really hot clothing. And classy guys. Yeah, hot clothing and super classy guys!” – Freshman Isabella Baldwin

 

 

“[I would] probably [visit] the recovery period after WWII in Europe. I think it’d be interesting to watch, not necessarily experience, what processes Europe went through to rebuild its nations, salvage cultures, and develop new languages.” – Senior Irena Weaver

 

“The twenties because I think flapper dresses would be fun and it just seems like a glamorous time period.” – Senior Vivian Torres

 

 

“I would travel back to ancient Greece because I’m obsessed with all the mythology. Or maybe dinosaur [times] because I love them.” – Freshman Nikki Arm

 

 

“Dinosaur [times] so I could have a pet T-Rex. I’d catch it easily because its arms are to short so it can’t really do much and then I’d make a saddle and ride it. Probably dropping onto its back by pterodactyl.” – Sophomore Cora Germann

“I would like to live in ancient Egypt because that was the ancient civilization that allowed women to have the most freedom. Also, it was always really warm and you got to go barefoot and wear sandals all day. And I like how it seems to have been a relatively simple life.” – Sophomore Claire Magnuson

 

“Victorian ‘cause the architecture was amazing. And they wore really cool dresses and their technique for painting portraits was funny!” – Sophomore Lindsey Stidham

 

“I would love to live in the era of the Great Gatsby because they had amazing dresses, hair, makeup, and parties.” – Sophomore Nadya Butova

 

“I have always wanted to live in the 1970s because of the culture. Everything was so creative and colorful. I love the music too-disco, not rock.” – Sophomore Sophie Henry

 

“I would want to go to the 1920s because they had really cute clothing. The people were also really nice… I think.” – Freshman Molly Vonder

 

“I know everybody wants to go the forties and fifties and stuff, but the racism part is kinda weird to me. I’d probably choose the twenties and hang out with bank robbers.” – Sophomore Harrison Pearson

 

“Definitely some, like, ancient American civilization like the Mayans or Aztecs. But maybe not because of the whole human sacrifice thing.” – Junior Robert Garcia

 

“Man, I’d be on some Napoleon I era, cause you know he was straight running France like a club. And you know the French invented croissants, so you know they did something right.” – Junior Angel Perez

 

“I would live in the late 1950s, because I can dress like Carrie Mulligan in ‘An Education.’ Plus things would be less expensive. I would go back further, but I like indoor plumbing.” – Senior Wendy Disch

 

“I would live in World War II America, because there were antibiotics and cool cars. Though I’d want to be 12 during World War II, because that way I wouldn’t get drafted, but I’d be old enough by the 1960s to enjoy patriarchy.” – Junior Matthew Eliceiri

“I would travel to the Industrial Era of England, because it is just an interesting time to me, in terms of literature and creative thinking.” – Sophomore Ciara Reiter

“World War II, because I really want to know what it would be like to fight for what’s right, and for our country.” – Senior Wesley Whittlesey

 

 

“I would smash the time travel device because time travel is silly and causes problems.” – Freshman Tara Caulfield

 

“Victorian France. The old school Marie Antoinette type time. I have always loved the fashion. It amazed me and confused me at the same time. Their hair was just amazing. Height achieved.” – Junior Madeline Marko-Martinez

 

“Medieval times, but only if I could avoid all the torture and warrior weapons. I would also show everyone that girls can be tough too, since back then the women just had to stay at home and work. Plus, it sounds exciting to face all the challenges and experience all the action that time period had to offer.” – Freshman Kelly Luong

 

“Definitely the fifties, since I like the fashion and attitude of that time period. Everything was all really unique, plus that was around the time that TV and all sorts of modern culture were being introduced. I would also want to meet Lucil Ball from ‘I Love Lucy,’ since she was really fun and I love the show.” – Freshman Linnea Leidy

 

“I think I would want to go to the seventies, since that was around the time of the hippies. Plus, I think it would pretty cool to drive around one of those big Volkswagen busses! I would also take the chance to show all the people in the seventies modern technology, like iPhones, because it would probably blow their minds.” – Freshman Shayne Busick
