Girls Volleyball: SDA vs Olympian

September 9, 2016

The varsity girls volleyball team had its first home game yesterday, Sept. 8, against Olympian High School. Throughout all four sets, both teams played hard and were neck and neck, with only slight dips in morale at times. Ultimately, SDA won three out of the four sets.

The first set started out with a tight competition, both teams performing skillful moves and playing with focus. After the first 10 points, SDA shifted into the next gear and started playing with an obviously boosted morale, making multiple kills and blocks. SDA’s defense also performed exceptionally well, with senior libero Kiani Kerstetter incurring multiple enthusiastic cheers from the crowd as she dove after balls. SDA slowed down a bit once they reached 23 points, and Olympian started catching up, but SDA eventually won. The first set ended with a score of 25-19.

The second set started out encouragingly well, with SDA establishing a small lead. However, Olympian stepped up its game and managed to get a bigger lead. SDA eventually caught up, and the two teams were even for 10 points. Unfortunately, as Olympian edged closer and closer to 25, SDA’s morale dropped, and they lost at the last moment. Olympian won the second set with a close score of 25-23.

By the third set, both teams with a win underneath them, the players were tired but determined. Like the other two sets, they started out with a tight score for half of the set. Ten points in, SDA started racking up points and playing with a renewed rigor. Olympian’s team members who were sitting on the bench, in a display of poor sportsmanship, began chanting and calling for a side-out while SDA players were serving in an attempt to distract. Luckily, SDA was focused and didn’t miss a single serve.

Junior Sarah Colla made an exceptional number of kills, even from back row, standing out as the star hitter for the crowd as they cheered her on and she won the set’s final point. SDA victoriously won the third set with a final score of 25-17.

SDA went into the fourth set with an enthusiastic attitude and their sights set on the win. They ended up winning that fourth set with a score of 25-18, taking the ultimate win for their first home game without even going to a fifth set.

The varsity girls volleyball team will be playing their next game against Mission Hills on Sept. 13 at 5 p.m.
