A Win and a Loss for Girls Soccer vs LCC

SDA girls soccer teams played LCC for their second league game against the Mavericks. The junior varsity team ended up with an impressive win against LCC with a score of 3-1 and varsity had a close game that resulted in a loss of 0-1.

The varsity game began and possession over the ball switched between LCC and SDA, with LCC having slighter control over the ball. Early in the second half the Mavericks took a shot on goal and in a miscommunication over how to defend to the ball, goalie junior Makena Garvey was kneed in the neck. With a possibility of a concussion, Garvey was subbed out and evaluated by LCC’s athletic trainer.

In replacement for Garvey, junior Ava Patton was taken out of midfield and put into goal. With five minutes left in the first half, LCC took another shot on goal. The ball bounced off the goalie’s hand and an LCC player quickly shot it in making the score 0-1 just as half-time was called.

After half time the game resumed into second half, and possession over the ball switched back and forth equally between the Mustangs and the Mavericks. The Mustangs got possession of the ball and the left wing moved the ball up the line and crossed it into the center of the field. An LCC defender attempted to clear the ball but kicked it behind the corner flag, resulting in a corner kick for SDA. Junior Brittney Reppenhagen took the shot and SDA barely missed the goal heading it above the cross bar. The whistle blew and the game finished with a close score of 0-1.

On an away field and without their main goalie, the Mustangs played a strong overall game against the Mavericks Thursday night.

Earlier, the Mustangs JV team began the first half of the game with multiple shots on goal. Fifteen minutes into the game, freshman Irelyn Wesley took a shot on goal, and scored the first point for the Mustangs.

Shortly after their first goal, the Mustangs pushed up the field and crossed the ball into the center where freshman Kyle Delorme shot, making the score 2- 0 before half-time. After half-time possession of the ball switched back between LCC and SDA. Halfway through the second half, sophomore Alexis Price assisted and passed the ball to sophomore Tess Gardner who scored the third goal for the Mustangs. With a score of 3-0 and five minutes left, the game was almost over when LCC got ahold of the ball and beat SDA’s defense line, scoring and making the final score 3-1.

The horn blew and the game ended, marking a successful league win for the Mustang JV team.

After the game sophomore Morgan Busick said, “We communicated well, which led to effective passes and goals.”

In comparison to their first league game against LCC with a loss of 0-1, the JV team came back and dominated their second game for a Mustang win. Earlier in the season, varsity had defeated LCC 1-0.
