Low Fidelity: Obituary Releases New Album and Music Video

March 22, 2017

Florida death metal legends Obituary returns to the graveyard once again with a new self-titled album, as well as a fun-yet-brutal video for lead single “Ten Thousand Ways to Die.”

Musically, “Obituary” doesn’t stray from the old-school death metal formula derived by the band in the 1980s and 90s, with catchy riffs and snarling brutal vocals. Song titles such as “End it Now” and “A Lesson in Vengeance” are sure to deliver to death metal purists, and probably deter the interest of metalheads looking for something completely original. Not to say that the album won’t make your neck sore from headbanging, but listeners who want something they haven’t heard before should look elsewhere.

Although death metal is known for its head-on carnage, the songwriters of Obituary are unafraid to flex their melodic chops every now and then, such as in the guitar solo on “Sentence Day.” Although they aren’t Opeth, these melodic moments keep the record interesting and are sure to provide some air-guitar-worthy bedroom shredding.

Visually, the video for “Ten Thousand Ways to Die” is fantastic. A continuation of the band’s zombie-bashing animated escapades from 2013’s video for “Violence,” this one feels like the corny brutality of the film “Deathgasm” meeting the goofy recklessness of Trash Talk’s video for “The Great Escape.” The denim-jacket clad, long-haired crowd is sure to eat this one up.
