“American Horror Story” Season 6 Episode 2 Review

September 23, 2016

In this week’s new episode titled “Chapter 2” (the dullest title you can get for an episode), the ghostly presence in Shelby and Matt’s house has made itself known. We finally get to see actress Kathy Bates’ character, known as the hostile tribe leader, and her colonist wood hermit sidekick, Lady Gaga, after of course, Shelby decides to follow a stranger into the ominously misty North Carolina forest. When she returns home of course no one believes her, and so on went the crazy-but-not-actually-crazy-wife pattern from season one of “Murder House.” This episode did little to counter the claims that season six is just “Murder House” but without Evan Peters (so far). There are theories though, that he plays the elusive and grotesque Pigman.

The Pigman- or at least his pig squealing minions- terrorize Shelby and she just can’t take it anymore. Shelby and Matt, decide to go into the forest and they get lost in the woods like the cliché horror movie characters they are. Not even one day earlier, Shelby witnesses colonists burning a man alive yet she decides she won’t let these people scare her. Though, you would have to be a moron not to be terrified of blood thirsty ghosts, or at the very least rednecks.

Lee, Matt’s sister, decides that despite her night in the basement with Shelby last episode, it’s ok to bring her daughter to the house- like that won’t totally backfire. Even if Lee doesn’t believe that the break-in from episode one was anything paranormal, at the very least she has to know that the house is the target of hillbilly terrorism. Not the best place to have daughter-mommy time with the kid you only get to see three weeks out of the year. Lee was literally trying to get what little custody she had over Flora taken away. And after Flora starts talking to her “imaginary friend” Priscilla, Lee just brushes this off telling herself it’s normal for kids to have creepy threatening imaginary friends.

Turns out a doll (though it looked like an american girl doll and those are expensive) is worth the lives of everybody in the house. At Least, it would have been, if Mason and Lee hadn’t interrupted. Mason, like the good father he is, whisks Flora away from that god-forsaken house as fast as he can. Lee however, essentially kidnaps Flora and brings her back to house. Ten minutes later, she’s missing. After Shelby, Matt and Lee desperately search the woods. They find a bloody tree dripping with Flora’s yellow Jacket. How did that even get here? While this is a horrifying way to show what happened to Flora it feels like the ghosts are little extra.

Before the discovery of what is left of Flora, Shelby and Matt discover that there were previous murders in their house. Turns out a pair of nurses ran an old folks home and tried to spell their favorite word with the first letter’s of their patient’s names. The psychotic nurses however, fail to complete their task. They supposedly fled the country; however, according to Dr. Elias Cunningham, the last owner, they were murdered by whatever resides in the house. There is without a doubt someone or something in that house and hopefully Shelby, Matt and Lee won’t meet the same fate as Flora.

Make sure to tune in for the next episode of “American Horror Story,” which will air next Wednesday.
