Today at SDA: Water Reclamation Field Trip

By Mallika Seshadri, Assistant Opinions Editor

Students in AP Environmental Science took a field trip to the San Elijo Water Reclamation Facility to learn about the various processes involved in treating the water that is used on a daily basis in local neighborhoods. Those who chose to go assembled in front of the facility’s administration building where they were welcomed by our tour guide, who was one of their employees.

Students were taken on a walking tour of the facility where they had the opportunity to view their many tanks, pipes and pools (mostly filled with murky water containing small microorganisms). As the guide explained the many processes involved in the water reclamation process, he also stressed the high degree of care and diligence the plant takes to ensure all of their practices are executed sustainably and are environmentally friendly. Overall, the students were very engaged and inquisitive.

After the outdoor portion of the tour was complete, students were relieved to be taken into the dry labs where the guide showcased water samples at the various stages in the water treatment process. Students also had the opportunity to ask questions and learn about future opportunities in the field.
