Students “Adopt” Families This Holiday Season

Clubs and homerooms are participating in Adopt a Family, which is a program where homerooms can volunteer to help families in need during the holidays.

“We usually contact an organization such as SAY San Diego that does Adopt a Family and we tell them that we would like to adopt around 30 families,” senior Gabby Gjata said.

This program will allow homerooms to “adopt” a family for the holidays. Students bring in gifts for the families that are on their wish list. Participating homerooms were assigned a family by ASB which lists what the family member’s age and what they would like during the holiday season. The homerooms will then go out and get the gifts that the families want.

“It helps families in need during the holidays. These families usually can’t afford gifts for their children so we help them out! And some of the things they need are necessities such as shoes,’’ Gjata said.

The family sizes ranges from two to five people and typically $50 are spent on the gifts for each family member, according to Gjata. ASB had ten families who are in need of gifts. Once SDA students are recommended to wrap each gift and put it in a box and then drop it off at room 70, Gjata said.
