SDA’s boys water polo overpowered LCC in Tuesday’s rivalry match.

SDA Water Polo Makes A Splash

October 12, 2017

With 10 seconds left in the game, parents and fans of the boys water polo team counted down the seconds leading to San Dieguito Academy’s victory over long-time rival La Costa Canyon on Tuesday.

“We went into the game expecting it to be really close, like a two-goal game either way,” said senior Kekoa Wheeler. “In the weeks leading up to LCC, we focused on playing together as a whole team and really helping each other out on defense as well as swimming so we could beat LCC with counterattacks.”

The game, called the Crosstown Splashdown, started off quickly with SDA scoring in the first five minutes. Soon after, LCC scored their first goal, getting the fans rallied up. SDA scored next, and LCC followed with their second goal. With the game tied at 2-2, it was apparent the competition would be tough.

Two more goals were scored for San Dieguito in the first half, leaving the half time score at 4-2.

The second half of the game picked up with SDA dominating possession of the ball and outscoring the Mavericks. The Mustangs extended the lead in the second half scoring six goals and shutting out the Maverick offense, leaving the final score at 10-2.

Senior Nate Conger scored four goals for SDA, senior Kekoa Wheeler was next with three goals, senior Matheus Gensler followed with two goals, and junior Evan Butler scored one.

On the defensive side of the game, goalie Gavin Silberman had fourteen saves, and junior Dylan Herrera had three.

“It all paid off. I’m so proud of the team and everyone’s performance. It was a team win and if we keep it up we’ll go far in CIF,” Wheeler said.

The Mustangs will be playing Torrey Pines at 7:30 today at Alga Norte.
