My Message: Respect Women’s Rights

October 13, 2016

Dear future president,
You are to be a symbol of our country’s ideals and a role model to future generations; I think it’s reasonable to ask that you respect the most basic description of who I am. I am a female, and I want my rights and ideals to be respected just as much as a male’s are. Frankly, I shouldn’t even need to address this at all because we should have all learned to accept each other as equals by now. However, based on the statements made by a certain presidential candidate, it’s clear that this is an issue that still needs rectifying.

As my next president, you should make me feel like an intelligent, capable, respectable member of society—not an object that is up for grabs. You have to recognize that I, and all other women in this country, have the right to make decisions regarding my body. You should take an aggressive stance against the wage gap that causes other females like me to receive a fraction of the compensation that their male counterparts receive. You need to make an undying effort to combat any matter that discriminates against and belittles anyone who identifies as female, because when that occurs, it isn’t simply a “gender” issue; it’s a human issue, and it should be blatantly clear to even the most oblivious of observers that if our country is riddled with humanitarian discrimination—it’s a broken country.

Sincerely,

Linnea Leidy
