To Skin or Not to Skin

February 25, 2020

I love fruit.

But the real question is, can you eat the skin on them too? I mean, a lot of fruit you probably should not eat the skin. However, there are a few that you can.

For example, it would hurt the roof of your mouth to eat a cantaloupe or a watermelon, so please don’t eat those. Although, eating the skin of an orange isn’t that bad (just kind of weird). Some fruit skins are pointy and sharp, like a dragon fruit or a prickly pear, those too, please do not eat. And some just are gross to eat, like a banana peel (ew). If you don’t feel like eating the banana peel (because ew), you can just rub it on your face and take advantage of its moisturizing abilities. A coconut peel should not be eaten because it is good to have teeth, and eating a coconut would allow your teeth to begin to shatter (not good, very not good).

One peel, I personally eat and it is not gross, is the peel of a Kiwi. I have a lot of trouble eating kiwis with a spoon and it always squirts up in my eyes and it stings. So, one way to overcome these obstacles, is by just eating the kiwi like an apple. It adds to the taste of the kiwi and the hairy texture of the peel may satisfy your mouth with a new sensation you might have not felt before.

Now even though there are consequences, there are benefits too. Fruit peels are actually rich in vitamins, antioxidants, fiber, etc. (who knew?!) They also happen to be the most nutritious part of a fruit. They also add a new taste to an already delicious food, like a little soreness and a new texture. But most of all, it helps the environment. After eating a fruit, the last thing you want to do is carry around the scraps, therefore, people tend to leave them on the ground or forget about them until they are moldy (gross). But, if you just eat the peels, you don’t have to throw them away and ruin the environment (your own way of composting).

I mean you most likely already eat fruit skins such as on apples and peaches. So why not eat the skins of the odder fruits. Widen your horizons.
