Water Polo Makes a Second-Half Comeback Against Torrey Pines

October 17, 2017

SDA’s varsity boys’ water polo team played against Torrey Pines last Thursday and, despite being down five points at half, the Mustangs made an amazing comeback but fell to the Falcons with a close score of 9-10.

Torrey Pines came out strong in the first quarter scoring two goals within the last three minutes. To open up the second quarter, a goal by senior Wesley Tyler put SDA on the scoring board to make the score 1-2.

Throughout the quarter, the teams switched back and forth between possession of the ball but Torrey Pines continued to have the lead. The score by halftime was 2-7 in favor of Torrey Pines.

After halftime, Torrey Pines scored the first goal of the third quarter. SDA’s Jude Irons, sophomore, responded by scoring two goals. By the end of the quarter, senior Kekoa Wheeler scored two more goals for the Mustangs. The score of the game going into the fourth quarter was 4-10 with Torrey Pines still in the lead.

SDA started the last quarter of the game strong, scoring five more goals and keeping Torrey Pines at 10 for the rest of the game. The scorers for the Mustangs in this quarter were Wheeler, senior Nate Conger, and junior Matheus Gensler.

After the match, the SDA junior Dylan Herrera evaluated the team’s performance: “We’ve been a high scoring team all season, scoring only two goals in the first half was not a normal situation for us. We knew we could do better and believed we could come back.”
