SDA Boys’ Basketball vs Mission Vista

The SDA boys basketball team beat Mission Vista in their first home game of the season on Tuesday.  With the Stang Gang (SDAs student section) cheering them on, the Mustangs came back from a slow start to finish with a W against the Timberwolves.

The game started out with both teams obtaining equal procession.  Senior Tyler Hagan scored the first points of the game with a 3-pointer. However, Mission Vista began to take control of the game capitalizing on their possessions. The first quarter ended with the Mustangs behind by five points, but they did not give up.

As the whistle blew to start the 2nd quarter, the Mustangs continue to fight on offense against the Mission Vista wall. SDA had a lot of possession the 2nd quarter;  however, the team struggled to finish with points. As the 2nd quarter clock ran down to 0, the Mustangs were still behind, 19-29. The boys ran to their team room to discuss what had happened during the game and prepare for the next two quarters.

During the half time break, a dance troop called “Lost and Found” performed for the audience. They pumped the audience up and got everyone excited for the end of the game.

As the whistle blew to start the 3rd quarter, the SDA student section came alive. They cheered the boys on with screams and chants which seemed to help the boys to start out strong. The Mustangs began scoring lots more points and started to stop the Timberwolves on defense.  They kept the energy up and fought hard to take the lead for the first time the whole game.

With the crowd behind them, the Mustangs seemed to have made a 180 degree turn for the better. The time was running down for the third quarter and as the buzzer rang, junior, Garret Stone scored a 3-pointer making the crowd go wild.

The energy and commotion of the crowd continued the 4th quarter. While the Mustang had a big lead, the Timberwolves started to come back. The game began to get close as time wound down. With 30 seconds on the clock, SDA led by three points.  The Timberwolves were on the attack as the crowd counted down the seconds left. But, a mistake by the Timberwolves resulting in two successful free throws for Stone with one second left on the clock guaranteed the Mustangs the win, 53-48.

The mustangs play their next home game against Canyon Crest Academy on Friday, Jan. 16.
