Boys Water Polo Plays Last League Game

November 3, 2016

An air of spirit surrounded the Alga Norte pool as SDA’s boys water polo team took on CCA on their Senior Night. SDA’s varsity team lost 12-16 to CCA.

Before the varsity game got underway, seniors Scott Anderson, Connor Dahl, Eric Wimsatt, Michael Vickery, and Sam Dumont were recognized individually with words from coaches, and then took pictures with their families.

The first quarter started out with a bang, as Dumont scored the first goal within 30 seconds. CCA fired up and showed they would not let this game go, scoring five goals during the quarter. SDA kept fighting back, finishing up the quarter with two goals by sophomore Matheus Gensler and junior Kekoa Wheeler.

In the second quarter, juniors Zach Lewis and Carl Winner and senior Sam Dumont scored as SDA gained on CCA. The teams went into halftime with a score of 6-7, CCA one point in the lead.

Third quarter had some great saves by both the SDA and CCA goalies. SDA’s starting goalie, Dahl, was injured, so sophomore Dylan Herrera stepped in. CCA scored five times, and sophomore Jake Holland and junior Nate Conger added one goal each to the scoreboard, bringing the score to 8-12 at the end of the third quarter.

The end of the game did not disappoint, with Gensler and junior Max Van Loan scoring one goal each, and Conger finishing with two more goals in the fourth quarter. SDA was fighting until the very end.

“I’m probably going to miss hanging out with all of the guys most,” Dahl said about coming closer to the season. “I think we drastically improved our defense and communication. We were able to play team defense which allowed us to keep the game close. We were in a slump the past few weeks, and after this game, I think we’ve come out of the slump in time for CIF.”

Wimsatt said, “Overall, the team played incredibly well and we can do better when everyone’s healthy again. In CIF, we have to do a better job getting back on defense faster and covering up the drives.”
