Lady Gaga
By: Ari Brin
SDA students have never been known to walk around school in bejeweled lingerie and heelless platform shoes. But they sure do regard someone who does as their 2010 fashion icon.
If the term “fashion icon” is synonymous with donning wacky get-ups, then I guess Lady Gaga is a fashion icon for the ages. She is known for stepping out for an evening stroll in the freezing chill of London in nothing but her skimpy, sparkling unmentionables. She goes out for an afternoon hot dog in an Alexander McQueen gown and a giant silver lobster for eyewear.
But all of her scandalous casual attire does not hold a candle to the crazy outfits that she dons at award shows. From Armani Couture, ethereal dresses, to sculpted metal outfits with plastic crystals jutting out from all angles.
Her makeup always matches; huge false lashes line her glittery eyes. Her lips are frosty, and her brows are drawn on, because she honestly doesn’t have any to begin with. Gaga is never caught without her “face” on.
Perhaps the most infamous of all her outfits smelled like a carcass and was once alive. Gaga wore the “meat dress” complete with meat shoes at the VMA awards in 2010. It immediately caused a stir: was it real? Fake? She later went on ‘Ellen’ to explain: not only was it real meat from real animals, but it also stood for something: gay rights!
Oh, Gaga.
But love her or hate her, her outfits are classics. No one can forget the dress she wore which was created entirely out of Kermit the Frogs. She was the face that launched a thousand hair bows, the body that launched a thousand caution-tape dresses (which was unforgivable, by the way). She is an icon, and her sense of style will long outlast her 15 minutes and forever change the landscape of fashion.
Emma Watson
By: Kai Schlesinger
Some may know her as the girl from “Harry Potter” and others as a 2010 fashion icon. Throughout the years Emma Watson has always been on her game when it comes to style. Watson has been receiving much media attention for her recent drastic transformation to a pixie cut. When appearing on the red carpet Watson tends to lean towards more elegant ensembles that emphasize her petite figure. But now that Watson has been attending Brown University, her candid style has been more casual. Watson’s trendy outfits earned her a spot as one of the most influential style icons of 2010.
Katy Perry
By: Katherine Bueche
She’s a California girl, every guy’s teenage dream, and gives you the hummingbird heartbeats. Who is this I speak of? This would be Katy Perry, who is not only absolutely fabulous, but a runner up for the best style icon of the year. Most likely in efforts to promote and fit the vibes from her new cotton candy-scented album, Teenage Dream, Perry has donned numerous colorful and sweet outfits in 2010. Most of her dresses have a similar theme: unbelievably skintight, colorful, and have some kind of odd print on them whether it be candy cane stripes or pineapples.
Leighton Meester
By: Emily Maxwell
Leighton Meester is known for playing the impeccably stylish Blaire Waldorf on Gossip Girl, but this year her off-screen style proved that she is a style icon aside from her character. While Meester’s candid style is casual and comfortable, her red carpet choices this year have been far from boring, with bold printed fabrics, plunging neck-lines and cutout dresses. This year, she has been known for taking fashion risks and recently was seen wearing a revealing lace Marchesa jumpsuit on the red carpet.
Whether it’s edgy, classic, or modern, Meester’s outfits are never repetitive, and with her radiant self confidence, Meester’s brave clothing choices are pulled off effortlessly.
