Fashion: a prevailing custom or style of dress, etiquette, socializing, etc. This is the dictionary definition of the word fashion. Although I think this is a perfectly fine definition for the word, I don’t think it properly describes the social and cultural significance that fashion has on our surrounding world.
When a person says the word fashion, many things come to mind. For me, fashion is such an endless and indefinable word it is almost impossible to describe what comes to my mind. However when I started thinking about how fashion means different things to different people I decided to ask the SDA student body what the first thing is that pops into their mind when hearing the word fashion. Here is what I discovered.
“I think of people walking down a runway in ridiculous clothes that no one would actually wear down the street, being critiqued by a bunch of designers that think the uglier and more outrageous the outfit is, the more fashionable it must be.” – Rachel Weinfield, Junior
“Fashion- A way to show others who you are through what you wear.” –Kendall Running, Junior
“Skinny Bitches!” – Loraina Stinson, Junior
“Style!” – Paul Gabriola, Senior
“A popular style.” – Kyle Carter, Sophomore
“Christian Siriano…he’s super fierce!” – Lindsey Valenzuela, Junior
“Pretty things!” – Michelle Mealy
“Best way of self expression.” – Bianca Rice, Junior
“Fierce.” – Tanya Gomez, Sophomore
“Heels and Every Hallway is a runway at SDA.” – Cynthia Belman, Sophomore
“Money and rich people who buy expensive clothing.” Lena Ohlson, Junior
“Clothes.” – Taryn Meinhardt, Sophomore
So whether or not fashion has a true meaning as an art form, students at SDA surely have their opinions on the topic.
