Dean watches over his comatose brother.

SPOILER ALERT

The prayers of millions of fan girls were answered Monday night when “Supernatural” returned to The CW for its ninth season. “Supernatural” follows two brothers, Dean and Sam, who travel the country hunting demons, ghosts and other paranormal monsters sometimes with the aid of their angel friend, Castiel.

After the heart-wrenching season eight finale, most fans were left in a pool of their own tears, wondering what would happen to their beloved boys. Cas became human, Sam nearly died (again), and Dean…well Dean stayed his usual angsty self.

Sam’s coma at the beginning of the episode had me worried for a cliché plot line, but it allowed for an emotionally-gripping premiere that sets up for drama later this season. However, it looks like that drama will include Dean and Sam endlessly bickering. The show feels the need to have this plot point repeat each season, and I just find it annoying.

Cas wasn’t feeling so hot at the beginning of this season, either. No longer being an angel, he’s forced to adapt to his new human form. Eating, sleeping, and not being able to smite people with the touch of his fingers are all things he’s not used to, and I’m excited to see his character development throughout this season.

As far as Dean goes, his need to save everyone was clearly evident in the premiere, but it looks like we might get to see a little more of him this season as he looks after his brother and protects Cas from vengeful angels.

Overall, I’m looking forward to this season. The show has let me down with seasons six and seven, but season eight was great and I’m hoping this one will follow that example.  I’m going to get to see a lot more of my favorite characters and I’m really excited to see Cas learn to be human. On the other hand, I’m not looking forward to the trivial drama that’s inevitably going to come between Sam and Dean.

If you don’t already watch “Supernatural,” I’d definitely recommend it if you’re fan of “Doctor Who”, “Lost”, or other cult classics. It’s got some amazing characters and iconic episodes, not to mention the eye candy.
