“The Colourist” Review

Music has once again reinvented itself with unbelievably creative genres and styles. The Colourist’s self-titled album is a perfect example of the unique capabilities that artists hold. Some may plainly call The Colourist an alternative group, but there’s much more to their definition of alternative.

The Colourist refer to themselves as belonging to the math rock genre. Math rock is a rhythmically complex and atypical style, which usually involves irregular starting and stopping, odd time signatures, and extended and dissonant chords. It is a rare genre, but it really makes their album and band as a whole stand out from all the other current pop and techno music.

The first half of the album starts off upbeat and reflects the start of a new beginning. But in the middle of the album, there’s a shift in fast paced style. The song “Stray Away” features a much slower tempo and is filled with intense and powerful guitar chords, hinting to the never-ending dilemma of finding perfect love.

“What Can I Say” and “Say You Need Me” shortly follow by bringing back the fun and rock n roll sounds that the album started out with. The lyrics come across with the context that life will not turn out the way that people will expect it to, but it only matters how people make the most of it. The motivational words of “Put the Fire Out” made The Colourist seem like they really care about the people that listen to their music and want to encourage them to work through their problems for a better tomorrow.

I think that this album was one of my favorites for this month, and I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for them. The Colourist proves that music is something that can evolve endlessly, and still be appreciated for its artistic and innovative qualities.
