The Walking Dead: Episode 505, “Self Help”

Going back to the way episodes were organized in season 4, “The Walking Dead” this year has been jumping around among different story arcs that are occurring simultaneously.

Last week’s episode focused on the disappearance of Beth, and clearing up what was happening with her.  This week picks up after the massacre at the church.  Abraham and a group of people departed from our core group.  Heading for Washington D.C., they are trying to deliver Eugene to the proclaimed safe-haven.  Eugene has the cure to the apocalypse.

In this episode, it takes the viewer through the beginning of their journey to D.C.  Encountering many obstacles along the way, they find out just how much hope is left in the world they live in.  With many new and interesting landscapes, there is a new feel to the consistent story-line.  “Self Help” went into more depth on character development, showing more of the personalities and growth of some newer characters such as Eugene.  In previous episodes, Eugene was completely helpless when it came to the walkers, but he becomes more accustomed to killing them in this installment.  Sunday’s episode leaves off with a thrilling ending that may, or may not in some cases, have shocked the viewer.  Throughout all of the build-up and mission to reach D.C., Eugene comes clean and informs the group that he actually was full of it the entire time.  He is not a real scientist and does not have a cure for the apocalypse.  This should leave for an awkward, yet interesting situation when they pick up on this group again.
