Week One: Monday Letdown

For many San Diegans, especially football fans, Monday night was a big letdown for the Chargers. During the first two quarters of the game, the Chargers seemed to be unstoppable. On the first play of the game the ball was tipped into the hands of Cam Thomas, one of San Diego’s defensive tackles; this was his first career interception. With the ball now in possession of the Chargers, Phillip Rivers, San Diego’s quarterback was able to throw a touchdown pass to Ryan Mathews, San Diego’s running back.

Unfortunately for San Diego, this was the only outstanding play of the game. The Chargers entered half time with a score of 21-7 and solid momentum. But during the second half of the game, the Texans answered back with a solid defense and a seemingly impeccable offensive strategy. The struggling Chargers hoped to take the game into overtime when the Texans scored a touchdown and tied the game, but San Diego was unsuccessful in doing so. At the end of the fourth quarter, the final score was 31-28 Texans.

Although this was a tough loss for the Chargers, there were some upsides. For instance, during the first half, San Diego proved that they can execute key plays stopping the opposing team in their tracks. They just need to figure out how to maintain that momentum without tiring so quickly. This coming Sunday, the Chargers will travel to Philadelphia to face the Eagles (who defeated the Redskins on Monday night). Philadelphia has proven to be a tough contender over the past few seasons, so it may be a difficult match up for the Chargers.
