New Building Officially Added to SDA Campus

October 4, 2017

SDA officially welcome the new building to the school, through a ribbon cutting ceremony in front of the new facility during lunch on Friday, October 20. The new science and math building now welcomes students and teachers for its first year at SDA, after nearly a year of construction.

SDA’s new principal Mr. Camacho gave a speech concerning the importance of the new facility “SDA is a school were educational experience is motivated and measure by our authentic culture, our talented teachers and staff, and of course our amazing students and their successes. The core of our success will come from our districts laser focus on continually learning and executing what is best for kids. The new SDA math and science building is a perfect example of that.”

Throughout the years math and science building were scattered around the campus making it challenging to have a space directed toward these subjects “Now I feel like we have an amazing opportunity because were all together” says Miss Lee “… it’s great for the kids to be able to come to one place to get help from a math or science teacher”

Ever since senior court has been torn down and the new building has been in construction many students wondered what it would look like and how would it contrast with the rest of SDA’s art filled walls.
Two students in the senior class, Olivia Kaminski and Emma Toscani, have now made a proposal for a mural to be painted in the new building. The proposal has brought a lot of controversy after the student’s emailed teachers and got one unhappy response “We’re trying to convince this teacher because we don’t want to make anyone uncomfortable. It’s everybody’s space and we don’t want anyone to be upset, it’s supposed to be something that’s beautiful” says Kaminski “ We came up with the idea of creating these blue-green wavelength pulsations on the walls, which creates a flow throughout the hallway instead of something jarring that stops traffic.”

As for students the changes affect seniors and freshman in different ways since this year’s 21’ class is the first freshman class to use the facility. Freshman Priscilla Avilla says “It’s really nice to have such a new building at SDA, and I’m glad I came in now that it’s done.” While the lucky freshman never went through the construction inconveniences, seniors had a very different experience.

Senior Angelique Velasco says “To have this construction going on for so long has kind of messed up ways of people getting to their classes. So it was a little bit confusing during those years but now seeing the new building and how it offers all this new technology and space that the teachers and students can utilize to create a better learning environment makes it all worth it.”
