Winter Break is Here

It’s that time of year again; there’s a noticeable drop in temperature, a sudden chill that bites the air – at  least, according to Southern Californians who aren’t used to winters in the snow. Christmas songs are on the radio again, and back to back Christmas movies are once again being played on TV. Christmas trees and Christmas lights are up, decorations have exploded like red and green rainbows in living rooms, family is in town, and everyone is very much anticipating the start to a new year.

Whether the time is spent simply sitting back and letting go of your worries or getting out and getting things done, there’s no doubt that everyone is looking forward to a well-earned break from school and the responsibilities that surround it.

Many students prefer to have a laid back two weeks filled with lounging around the house or spending time with family and friends, relishing in the freedom that they’ve been granted. “I’m looking forward to winter break because I love warm drinks and relaxing by the fire,” says Paige Mitchell, senior. “I also love the feeling of warm, puffy coats when I go outside.”

Furthermore, other people can’t wait to catch up with old friends and family they haven’t seen in a while. “I’m really stoked because I don’t have to get a foot surgery, so I can spend time with the people I love and reconnect with people,” says junior Lindsey Stidham.

It appears that staying in town doesn’t have to automatically mean a boring, eventless two weeks. “I’m super excited for break because I get to see my family out of town and hang with all my super close friends on my birthday,” says junior Lauren Matherly.

While some people are content with a less busy schedule, others are taking advantage of the time off and see it as an opportunity to accomplish important tasks that will benefit them in the future, while at the same time making sure they do have some time to themselves. “I’m going to finally catch up on sleep,” says junior Emily Landers, “but I’m going to use my free time to do volunteer work; I’m really excited to be able to spend time on others and not just myself.”

Junior Claire Magnuson is spending her break exploring potential colleges. “I’m really excited because I’m going to visit a bunch of universities I’ll eventually apply to,” says Magnuson.

Others are completing equally fundamental tasks alongside some of their favorite activities. “I’m letting Santa know that I want to take and pass my driving test next week,” says junior Brooke Russell. “Also, toasted coconut froyo is calling my name and I’m going to a quincenera!”
