Over forty students attended the second Japanese National Honor Society movie night last Friday in the library. The event raised over $100, but was more about gathering SDA students together and getting the JNHS name out there according to event organizer junior Laura Breidenthal.
Moviegoer junior Astrid Gonzales said: “I liked how it wasn’t just a movie. There was also food and origami, which as bad as I may be at it, it’s still an art that I can appreciate.”The movie shown was “Spirited Away,” a Japanese movie with English subtitles. The event also included origami tutorials and Japanese snacks such as onigiri (rice balls), mochi (Japanese rice cake), and ramune (Japanese soda).
The DVD froze about half way through (acting as an intermission), but there were enough activities and people to keep everyone busy. The problem was quickly fixed and the audience was able to watch the rest of the movie.
The event proved to be a new cultural experience for many people. “[JNHS Movie Night] gave me an opportunity to experience another culture. It’s very rare I watch movies in a language I don’t know,” said Gonzales.
