Students recite as many digits of Pi they can remember to teachers from the math department on Pi day to earn prizes such as various coupons and a cookie from Culinary Arts.

“Today is Pi day and we will dine, with 3.14159!” yelled an SDA student during lunch on March 14. Students gathered in front of the Mosaic to recite as many digits of Pi they could. Memorizing at least 15 digits won students a coupon to Pizzaiolo, 7/Eleven, and Sub Zero and a cookie baked by SDA’s Culinary Arts.

This year’s winners of the Pi competition include sophomore Megan McEldowney in fifth place with 111 digits, freshman Veronica Ness in fourth place with 119, freshman Noelle Hale in third with 119, junior Zach Lara in second with 128, and senior Ari Chillak in first place with 131 digits of Pi.

Hale was able to memorize 119 digits place putting “them in little four or five sequences.”

“There are patterns that can repeat close to each other,” Hale said.

Justin Levin, sophomore, also took part in the competition, memorizing 20 digits of Pi. “I remembered them from studying a long time ago,” said Levin.

In addition to the sugar cookies decorated in Pi-shaped frosting, Culinary Arts also baked five different kinds of pie for the teachers, including banana cream, pecan walnut, blueberry, pumpkin, and apple cranberry.

Spanish teacher David Bair commented on the day as a whole, saying that he enjoyed “the camaraderie with the math department, which is very cool.” He also gave thanks to the Culinary Arts joining up with the math department to create the pie the teachers were eating.

“This day makes SDA the special place to celebrate these special events,” he said.
