The remaining 2020 presidential candidates: Senator Bernie Sanders, former Vice President Joe Biden, and President Donald Trump.

State of the race

April 2, 2020

States, including New York, Kentucky, Louisiana, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, Indiana, Delaware, Connecticut, and Georgia, have postponed their presidential primaries. The last Democratic presidential debate was held without an audience and with the two qualifying candidates, former Vice President Joe Biden and Senator Bernie Sanders, six feet apart.

The Coronavirus Pandemic has turned the presidential election on its head. Candidates are no longer hosting in-person events, now opting for virtual rallies and town halls.

Since the suspension of Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard’s campaign and her immediate endorsement of Biden on March 19th, all presidential candidates are over the age of seventy and in the most vulnerable age range for the Coronavirus.

President Donald Trump has secured the eventual Republican nomination with 1,301 delegates. Joe Biden holds a tremendous lead over former front runner Bernie Sanders with 1180 delegates against Sanders’ 863 delegates for the Democratic nomination

Although many news organizations have reported on the Democratic nomination as a done deal, citing that the delegate math would make it extremely unlikely for Sanders to secure a lead over Biden, Sanders has remained in the race. Reports have come out from staffers that Sanders is “reassessing” his campaign, but nothing has come from that yet.

It is unclear if the Democratic convention, where either Biden or Sanders would officially receive the nomination, will be held at this point, although Trump has said he wants to hold the Republican convention in August. Another fear that many have is President Trump postponing the general election in November due to Coronavirus concerns, completely disrupting the democracy as Americans know it.
