SDA counselors host a senior college application Q&A session

September 22, 2020

It’s often overwhelming with the flood of essays, weighing expectations, or navigating the college application process just in general. However, have no fear, the San Dieguito Academy counselors are here.

Vicky DeJesus and Rebecca Vincent hosted a small college application Q&A session with the seniors during the asynchronous time.

The counselors walked through the ins and outs of the application process including links to walkthroughs on the common application tailored towards SDA students, compiling a frequently asked questions document, ordering a transcript, and more all of which could be found on the counseling website, specifically under the apply to college tab

The hot topic was letter of recommendation which is due in three days if a student is applying for early action or early decision.

Counselors hope to have students sign the FERPA agreement on the common application and on the document as well as providing information about yourself on the letter of recommendation survey.

“This process is about the value you add. There is no right or wrong. Colleges are finding ways to admit to you whether that is a unique interest you have or something else that isn’t in another part of your application. Your letter of recommendation shows a different side of you that is not explained in another area of your application,” DeJesus said.

For the last few minutes of the session, DeJesus sprinkled in words of wisdom to alleviate any stress students might have about the process of applying this year.

“More than any other year, I think it’s a very student-friendly evaluation season. There are so many factors that don’t fit the cookie-cutter standards because of COVID-19, school closures, and things that were not available to students. I understand students would have anxiety due to all the normal things…but it’s a more consumer-friendly process on the admissions and student’s side. I strongly feel there are so many different things that students would bring and serve in this process.”

If you have any questions, contact your counselor over email and schedule a call with them. A second session is being hosted tomorrow at 1:45 pm through 2:55 pm PT time on Google Meets. More information can be found on the Google Classroom for seniors and their website
