Chargers Column: Week Nine

Disappointment would be the best word to describe the outcome of Sunday’s game against the Redskins. For those of you who weren’t able to catch the game, allow me to fill you in on some of the key points.

With about four minutes left in the fourth quarter, San Diego had just gained a first down and was at the Washington one yard line. (Keep in mind that the score is 21-24, a field goal would tie the game, and a touchdown would win it.)Unfortunately and also quite disappointingly, San Diego was unable to score a touchdown and instead kicked a successful field goal, sending the game into overtime. At approximately nine minutes into overtime, the Redskins scored the game winning touchdown, resulting in a final score of 30-24.

Although the Chargers have made strong improvements in their performance over these past nine weeks, the team needs to make sure to take advantage of every opportunity they get to score. This coming week, the Chargers face the Denver Broncos, who are currently 7-1 in standings. The Broncos, who are second in the AFC West standings, have had a very successful season with Payton Manning as their starting quarterback.

It’s a tossup as far as what to expect for those who plan on watching Sunday’s game. San Diego is facing up against a very tough team, but in the past the Chargers have had no trouble defeating teams that are stronger overall. The game will also be taking in place in San Diego on the Chargers’ home field, which should give them an advantage over the Broncos. Time will tell
