Boys Soccer Advances to Finals

SDA boys varsity soccer team will be advancing to the CIF finals after their win versus Rancho Buena Vista last night.

“We were well-prepared, and everyone was giving their all. We went from barely making it to CIF and now we’re in the finals – it’s amazing,” said varsity goalie Yayo Olvera, junior.

The Mustangs scored three goals and shut out their opponents in the first half, essentially sealing the victory. However, RBV did attempt to come back in the second half, scoring two goals. SDA managed to keep them at bay, scoring two more as well. SDA’s goals belonged to sophomore Owen Ereso, who scored three, senior Tristan Norton, who scored one free kick, and junior Nathaniel Bloom, who scored one goal as well.

The final score of 5-2 resulted in screaming Mustang fans and ecstatic players and coaches.

Said senior Karen Vela, “We had a big crowd considering we had to go all the way to RBV. We were also very loud – people had vuvuzelas and cowbells to pump up the SDA fans.”

The finals are at 7 p.m.  Saturday, March 8, at Mesa College. The Mustangs will face Southwest High School, competing for the title of Division I champions.

“We came together to play as a team, and that really made the difference,” said senior Freddy Mazariegos.
