Boys soccer vs. Rancho Buena Vista 12/4/2014

On Thursday, December 4th, the boys’ varsity soccer team won their first home game. The game began at 6 p.m. with the San Dieguito Mustangs facing the Rancho Buena Vista Longhorns. With a large crowd cheering them on, SDA controlled the game from the first whistle.

A few shots by RBV in the beginning of the game had the crowd on their toes waiting for the Mustangs to get in their groove. As the Mustangs began to gain their momentum, Nathaniel Bloom, senior captain, scored the first goal of the game. A beautiful shot from the top right of the box to the left-hand corner of the goal put the Mustangs up 1-0. As the game continued, the Mustangs got on a roll. Following Bloom’s goal, Yayo Olvera, senior captain, scored a penalty kick that had resulted from a hand ball in the box. Soon after, junior Owen Ereso scored a goal off of a corner kick. Up 3-0, the whistle blew for half time.

As the second half started, both teams were fighting for the win. Although the Mustangs were up 3-0, the Longhorns did not give up. They were still fighting to get goals. Back and forth, both teams had opportunities to score but neither did, until a great ball was sent to one of the forwards on Rancho Buena Vista. He dribbled downfield and scored bringing the score to 3-1.

The game continued until, at last, the last whistle blew and the Mustangs walked away victors. The girls’ soccer team and other fans ran onto the field and created a tunnel for the team to run through.

For the Mustangs, the win was felt to be a good start to their season. “It was definitely really exciting to get a win on our first game. It was a great way to start the season. Hopefully the hard work and motivation continue,” said Senior Rubin Diaz, senior.

Keeper Amin Kaharlani, senior said, “I’m happy that we won but we started to fall out of the groove second half and we started to panic in the back line. But overall we played really well for our first game of the season.”
