The Sad Truth of Character Assassination

By Tate Oien, Staff Writer

If you have turned on the TV recently, you’ve probably heard about the Trump-Russia scandal. The FBI has been investigating Donald Trump and the Trump campaign for illegal ties with the Russian government. The investigation, which has been ongoing for some time, has uncovered some disturbing facts about Trump that the public needs to know. However, there is one individual who, through some stretch of the imagination, has been included in the investigation: Nigel Farage.

Nigel Farage is a member of the European Parliament from Britain who led the campaign for Britain to leave the European Union. The former Leader of the United Kingdom Independence Party faced many lies, slanders, and perversions of his words during the Brexit campaign, as to be expected. These rumors include that he was a former stockbroker, that he wanted to halt all immigration to Britain, and that he wanted to halt all economic relations with the EU, all of which are untrue. As a result, he is no stranger to the fake news that exists in today’s society. However, his alleged involvement in the Trump-Russia scandal is the last straw.

The FBI named Farage a person of interest in their investigation, just recently. They justified this, saying, “If you triangulate Russia, WikiLeaks, Assange and Trump associates the person who comes up with the most hits is Nigel Farage.” They also cited the fact that he had visited WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange as suspicious. These excuses are simply laughable.

Firstly, the fact that Farage has connections with the Trump campaign does not implicate him in some vast intrigue. They both share very populist ideals and it would make sense for them to support each other. Dozens of politicians have done this, including Ed Miliband (the former leader of the British Labour Party) and Barack Obama when a former top advisor to Obama ran as a Labour candidate in the UK elections. This is not uncommon. Secondly, connections to Russia have no logic behind them whatsoever. Farage has never been to Russia, nor had business dealings with them. The only evidence for this is his frequent appearance on RT, a Kremlin funded news outlet, and speaking favorably of Putin on certain occasions. However, this does not in any way connect him to the scandal. Finally, the meeting with Assange was not held in private. It was organized by LBC Radio, who had a view to an interview he conducted with Assange.
This attempt to connect Farage to the scandal is simply a poor attempt at character assassination. Farage is a revolutionary figure in British politics and he could pose a threat to the status quo, so it is in the best interests of the establishment to take him out. Thankfully, in spite of their attempts to destroy his reputation, the investigation will find no ties because none exist.
