Impressive Win from SDA in Regionals Game

SDA’s girls’ soccer team won their regionals game this Tuesday in a 6-0 sweep over Crean Lutheran High School.

The next game, the semifinals, will take place on Thursday at SDA.

After their CIF win on Saturday the girls advanced to regionals and played a home game. During the first half the two teams seemed well matched with the score at the end still being 0-0. SDA played well and had good possession and a couple of really good shot at the goal. The ball was in our half most of the half.

The girls then stepped it up the second half where they scored all of their six goals.
“We really bounced back… and we scored six goals in the second half because we all worked hard and we all wanted it,” said junior Nadia Haghani.

The MVP of the game was sophomore Julia Lucero who scored half of the team’s goals. She scored the first two goals of the game within seven minutes and then scored the sixth goal in the last 10 minutes of the game.
Sophomore Alyssa Fisher also scored two of the goals. Her two goals only came three minutes apart with one of them being a header goal.

The fifth goal was from sophomore Yarisette Sequeira who made a corner kick.
“It was really exciting to keep the score going and be a part of it. It was super fun because since it was the regionals game and everyone was just playing really well together so it was exciting to put the play together and finish on a corner especially since that was something we’ve really been focusing on in practice lately,” said Sequeira.

The previous game, the CIF championships match against Montgomery took place Saturday at Mission Bay High School. Along with members of the boys SDA soccer team, many parents and friends of the team showed up to show their support for the Mustangs.

After an extensive and focused workout led by head coach Siggy Eyre SDA lined up on the field in wait for the referee to begin the championship game. The first half of the game started with SDA having the majority of possession and control over the ball, and overall domination over Montgomery High. The first 30 minutes of the game consisted of the Mustangs passing the ball up the side and connecting it to the center to shoot, but eventually being shut down by Montgomery defenders.

With 10 minutes left of the first half, and pressure on both teams to score a goal before halftime, the Mustangs received a corner kick. Fisher took the kick and placed it towards the back post of the goal, where Haghani followed it with a header – barely missing the goal. With little additional time added to the first half, half-time was called with neither team able to score a goal.

The second half began with the Mustangs still having the majority of possession and domination over the ball. Ten minutes into the first half, the Mustangs managed to pass the ball up through the center, to attacking midfielder Lucero. Lucero took the ball past Montgomery defenders and drove the ball into the corner of the goal. With screams of joy from the crowd the Mustangs ran to the center of the field to hug, and celebrate their goal shot against Montgomery High.

With the new score of 1-0 the Montgomery Aztecs began pressuring the ball in hopes of evening the score. However, the Mustangs continued dominating with the majority of ball possession. By the time the second 40 minute half was over, the Aztecs were unable to get passed SDA defenders and score a goal, making the SDA Mustangs the CIF San Diego soccer Champions. With shouts of joy and excitement from the stands, the Mustangs celebrated and danced their way over to the center of the field to receive their CIF team trophy.
