Music Video Review: Lorde’s Yellow Flicker Beat

Lorde released the music video for “Yellow Flicker Beat,” her song off the “Mockingjay: Part 1” soundtrack to create hype for the “Mockingjay: Part 1” soundtrack, out on Nov. 17. The soundtrack also contains two other Lorde songs, “Ladder Song” and “Meltdown” that will be available for purchase after the album is released.

The video for “Yellow Flicker Beat” has reached over 2 million views on YouTube, and is quite different from music videos that Lorde has previously released. Some of the scenes in the video take place in a motel room, and others by a pool.

Though the music video does not contain any obvious references to “The Hunger Games,” aside from a static-filled television, the music video is ripe with symbolism that ties into “Mockingjay.” For example, in one scene, Lorde is dancing in the spotlight, with people surrounding her. In “Mockingjay,” Katniss, as the figurehead of the rebellion, is always in the center of attention.

In another scene, Lorde confidently walks through a crowd of party guests before falling down into an abyss, unnoticed by the guests. Though Katniss tries to appear calm and collected on the outside, on the inside she feels as though she is falling apart, emotions that come through in the music video.

Many of the scenes feature Lorde dancing alone, symbolizing Katniss’ isolation from the other residents of District 13 throughout “Mockingjay.”

The video, because of its symbolism, makes for a much better viewing experience than any music video laden with obvious references to “Mockingjay” would be, as it gives the viewer something to think about while they are watching the video.

The video is quirky yet dark, and goes along well with the song. There is always something new to notice when watching the video, which keeps it interesting.

“Yellow Flicker Beat” is available on iTunes for $1.29, or can be automatically downloaded if the “Mockingjay: Part 1” album is preordered, for $11.99.
