Forum 3/20/14: Exhibition Day Recruitment

By Marin Callaway, Staff Writer

Physics teacher George Stimson opened the lunchtime forum Thursday with a plea for help with Exhibition Day . Stimson, who used to help organize Exhibition Day, explained that the event is a huge undertaking for ASB.

Exhibition Day is an all-day event each year which allows students, clubs, and classes to showcase talents and unique interests. Organizing the logistics of it is not impossible, but “recruiting people to do things” is much more difficult, he said.

According to Stimson, past student exhibitions have included welding demonstrations, piano concerts, and even sword fighting. ASB wants to encourage students to sign up to do exhibitions like these.

“Please, if you do anything at all, the most important thing is recruiting people,” said Stimson.

Senior Cassidy Mayeda also addressed forum attendees stressing the need for exhibition sign-ups.

“The main purpose is not to be the planners of the day…our job is to be the advertising force, giving energy and encouraging all sorts of people to have exhibitions,” she said.

This year, juniors Kennedy Anderson and Dustin Sleet are in charge of Exhibition Day. The two opened the floor at the meeting to suggestions for student exhibitions.

The brainstorming session yielded a variety of ideas from games on the new field like Frisbee golf to film showings.

Senior Astrid Gonzales and junior Stacy Li expressed interest in involving writers to do poetry exhibitions. Li also suggested having elementary style games going on like jump roping.

Senior Ian MacGregor recommended having “more stuff with teachers getting humiliated…just for fun.”

The forum focused on increasing the number of exhibitions demonstrating student talent rather than concentrating on booths selling student-made items.

Exhibition Day will take place on Wednesday,  May 21.
